OldJournal: Oh. My. God.
Sep. 12th, 2001 12:23 amWow, what a surreal day today has been. I don't think words even EXIST for how I'm feeling right now, it's just not real...it's like a dream.
9:40 AM. PE. Sitting on the bleachers by the track, "eagerly" awaiting our chance to run a mile after the girls had finished. Meanwhile, a 4-propeller prop plane flies overhead. We suddenly hear a loud *BOOM*. Our first guess was thunder, but there are no clouds. We then assume it was the plane, but realize it's just a prop plane. We then noticed a small mushroom cloud developing in the direction of Washington DC, along with some other smoke, and recognized the boom as an explosion.
Said plane ends up flying right near said smoke, then turns around and proceeds west from where it came. We try to think what this explosion could be; I simply dismiss it as probably a warehouse explosion or something similar.
By about 10 AM it was time to end the period. We sat down in the gym, and are informed that Mrs. Lodal, our principal, has informed the school that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. Going back to the locker room to get dressed back into my school clothes, I happened to see a quick picture of the World Trade Center. I and my friends speculate that the aforementioned smoke was simply a coincidence.
10:12 AM. Heading to my 3rd period, I happened to stop in a classroom along the way and also then learned that the Pentagon had been attacked too, which explained the smoke and explosion. I proceeded to my 3rd period, now beginning to enter a period of shock. Throughout the halls are some people heavily grieving.
Throughout 3rd period it is hard to concentrate on class work. We were able to watch CNN for some of the time, so that we were enlightened to the fact that both World Trade Centers had collapsed as well as other things. Mrs. Lodal has also informed us not to panic, but that the school has been locked.
During lunch we played a rousing game of Mafia to distract ourselves from the serious issue that was at hand. We stayed inside, for we did not want to get locked out.
During 5th period our teacher gave us two options for what to do. We could either
a) Watch the news, or
b) Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark
I decided to watch the news, because it was constantly egging at my curiousity. Not much developed during this time, just confirmation of what I already knew. I also learned that an additional plane had crashed in Pennsylvania somewhere.
7th period required us to "work" again, although like 3rd, it was pretty much impossible to focus. Such was fine though, and we survived.
Not to panic us either, but after-school activities were also canceled. Thus, no really-badly-needed marching band practice. No clue how it's gonna go on Friday.
Thus ends my extremely insane day. There were probably other emotions I was not able to express here. I express my deepest graditudes for all who are involved in these attacks, and I thank God that none of my family were involved.
