e2j gateway
Jul. 31st, 2006 01:48 amSo, about that little "project" to which I was vaguely alluding in a previous post...
Basically, somebody on ABTech zephyr mentioned Google Calendar, and I again looked at it and was shocked that there was no way to receive calendar notifications/reminders via IM. Google already has a Jabber service, so it seemed surprising that they had no support for that.
I did know that Google would gladly send you reminders via email to your Gmail account, and as it turns out, you can forward to an off-site address via a filter as well.
Enter the email2jabber gateway: a few scripts and a jabber server all linked together for the primary purpose of getting Google Calendar alerts via your favorite Jabber service, though at its current state anything sent via email can be forwarded to Jabber. I'm not sure whether I'll restrict this in coming days or not.
For more information on how to use it, check out my writeup here, and let me know if you think this is nifty/interesting/boring/useless.
I should probably sleep now. I'm actually starting to get somewhat tired!
