Some people make me really, really sad.

I was in an argument with someone online this evening for about an hour, and at the end of it, he actually invoked Godwin's Law. I don't think I've ever actually seen it practiced before; it was incredible.

So yeah, some people make me really sad.

Relatedly, if you are a registered voter in Virginia, you should really vote this November, and you should really vote no on the first ballot measure. It really is possible to defeat it, but it's going to take a fair amount of effort - every vote matters.

The deadline to register to vote has passed, but it's not too late to get an absentee ballot. You have until the end of this month - but act now. You must.

(I swear, much like [livejournal.com profile] kumokasumi, one day I will stop talking about this.)

I had no idea you were into gay rights.

It's not only gay rights - for example, my dad and his girlfriend wouldn't be able to buy a house together without getting married. It pretty much just takes away all rights for any kind of partnership that isn't a married man and woman.

You do realize that's already illegal, right? §18.2-345, where "lewd and lascivious" means "having sex". I believe that one's more or less still in force, too. There's also a law against fornication, but that one got thrashed last year.
Seems to me that most of this is a) already VA law and b) totally going to get overturned as a result of Lawrence v. Texas.

Yeah, but like a lot of VA laws about sex, it probably doesn't get pursued much. It seems to me like reapplying it like this is pretty backwards - like we still can't get away from being good little Puritans four hundred years ago.

There's a difference, at least in my mind, between being "into gay rights" and being completely against "stamping on rights of people that are different from you."

There's also something to be said about asking questions when you're unsure about something...it's a degree of courage to admit ignorance that a lot of people, myself included, just don't have enough of.

As someone born with my foot in my mouth, I have to say I feel sillier not just admitting I'm ignorant.
The degree, however, is something I'm still too ashamed to disclose.

To be able to ask a question when you're unsure is a wonderful talent. I'll have to come take lessons from you. I have a similar issue with the foot and the mouth, but was never able to say, "Uhm, what?"

It takes practice. I dunno about lessons though. I mean I have an interesting way of spreading my bad habits to other people. I don't think the humility thing would be all that you got out of it.

At Mines, there's actually a corollary to Godwin's law called Mark Godwin's law, which basically does the same thing except instead of Hitler or Nazis, it's Jurassic Park. And it's pathetic. But true.

I think the two best parts of the conversation where when he asked if you were gay.
...
and then invoking Godwin's law.
Also the way he ended the conversation was pretty impressive.
Where by impressive I mean "you're an angsty 14yo girl."

Isn't that the way 95% of random internet conversations go?
